- (E. W. Barton-Wright., Edward William Barton-Wright (1860-1951) was born in Bangalore, educated in France and Germany, and worked as a civil engineer in Egypt, Portugal and what is now the Malaysian Peninsula and in Singapore. While working for the E.H. Hunter Company in Kobe, Japan (c. 1895-1898), he studied Shinden Fudo Ryū and Kodokan judo, two forms of jujutsu. Back in England, Barton-Wright combined those two forms of jujutsu with elements of British boxing, French "savate" and "la canne" and presented them as Bartitsu. He was one of the first Europeans to study and teach Japanese defense arts, and a pioneer in the concept of hybrid martial arts.)
